TextMap 4: What’s All the Buzz
About?
Barry D. Bayer of
Law Office Technology Review weighs in on TextMap
4 Since its release two months ago TextMap 4 has
been creating quite a buzz, but you don’t have to take our
word for it. Recently the following review for TextMap 4
appeared in Law Office Technology Review. In case you
didn’t have an opportunity to read it, we wanted to share it
with you here. Barry D. Bayer is the Editor-in-Chief of
Law Office Technology Review. He has been writing
about technology for law offices since 1987.
A New Text Map There
was fear, in some quarters, that the Lexis-Nexis
purchase of the CaseMap litigation suite might
hurt development of what has been a well designed
and useful set of litigator tools. In fact,
although company management seems to be changing,
in part, upgrades, if not completely new products,
are in the works. The latest is Version 4 of the
company's TextMap transcript analysis
tool.
TextMap takes a transcript text file,
prepares an index of all words in the file for
instant search capability, and permits the user to
annotate the transcript, pulling together passages
relevant to a legal or factual issues. If you are
already using something else to work with your
transcripts, you don't really need TextMap,
although the ability to dump selected passages
(and annotations) directly into CaseMap is very
convenient, if you are using CaseMap. (If you do
any but the simplest litigation you probably
should be using CaseMap, but that's a column for
another day).
New
Features TextMap 4 builds on older
versions with the ability to code (and color code)
for issues, tighter integration with CaseMap—an
"automatic" mode sends annotations, including
transcript text directly to CaseMap with a couple
of Mouse clicks—and better reporting, including a
PDF format that links the index appended to the
report with the transcript text. The index in the
program, itself, was always "live", but this
extends that capability to anyone with a PDF
reader. You can now arrange transcript "reports"
with annotations linked to the transcript as
footnotes or endnotes, with or without the index
included. (You can choose between a full size
transcript page, or a "four to a page "condensed"
transcript. At my advanced age I sometimes have
trouble reading small print, but I have no
difficulty with a "4 up" transcript from this, or
any other program I've used.)
I wasn't impressed with the ability to port
transcript snippets to Word, so that you can
include them in a Brief, for example; I still find
that cut and paste works well as I put my Word
document together. But the ability to search your
notes is a huge time saver when you know you added
a brilliant comment to your analysis, but don't
remember exactly where.
Finally, you can consolidate your work on
several transcripts important to your case into a
single report, which you may find more useful to
e-mail or store than several different electronic
files or paper caches. Not a big deal, certainly,
but a little more
convenient.
Considerations Since
being acquired by Lexis, CaseMap now provides its
products on annual subscription including
upgrades, although you can keep what you have if
you don't renew at the end of the year. The single
user, single seat price for TextMap is $169 for
the first year. (There are, of course, volume and
other discounts. Always ask!) But if you don't
already have a way to deal with your transcript
files, or are still relying on whatever the court
reporter provides, you should consider TextMap 4.
You can download from www.casemap.com/textmap/download.asp
and give it a 30 day trial before you buy, to see
if you agree with
me.
Summary TextMap 4
is a reasonably priced upgrade for an excellent
transcript analysis program. Give it a try if
you're not happy with your current method of
handling transcript
files. |

Early Case Assessment
Consulting The LexisNexis® Case Analysis
Consulting group will help your trial teams and litigation
support professionals quickly and effectively gain control
over your cases. With our approach to Early Case Assessment
and proven method to quickly “jumpstart” a case, our
consulting team will help you establish a procedure for
gathering and organizing early critical case information to
help assess case strengths and risks, set client expectations
and form a meaningful litigation plan during the early stages
and throughout the litigation process.
Quickly identify and gather early factual,
legal and strategic case information:
-
Jumpstart and organize your case to identify early
risk, assess case strengths and weaknesses and determine
what may still be missing.
-
Identify strategic factors that may impact your case,
including parties’ litigation tendencies and experience
level.
-
Identify previous settlement amounts in similar
cases, and prior judgments and/or verdicts from similar
cases.
Effectively organize early case information—by
bringing in and connecting all your critical case details
(from facts, research and documents to issues) in one
place.
-
Quickly
set up, organize and link your case facts, cast of
characters and documents to your research and issues.
-
Easily
review relationships between your facts, issues and research
to identify case strengths and weaknesses and confirm that
you can prove or defend the issues within your case.
-
Identify and detail outstanding questions particular
to your case to fill the factual and/or legal holes
identified.
CaseMap® Jumpstarts Let one of our
Case Analysis consultants work with your trial team to conduct
a CaseMap Jumpstart on a pending matter. In this collaborative
brainstorming exercise, our consultant acts as moderator
guiding the session, as a scribe quickly organizing material
in CaseMap, and as an educator showing your team how to take
the ball forward. By the time the session ends, our
consultants will have worked with your trial team to create a
detailed cast of characters, a multi-level issue outline and
an initial fact chronology. The trial team will also have
created a Case Summary ReportBook or other work product for
their client—and will have a plan in place for additional
analysis.
