You Can See Clearly Now―Even When You Look at Smaller Cases

Many firms still use word processing software or spreadsheets alone―or even handwritten sticky notes―to analyze cases that don't involve many parties and documents. In smaller cases, can CaseMap® software and related products really help firms save time or achieve better results? According to Daniel J. Siegel, a solo attorney who provides litigation consulting for other firms, the answer is a definite "yes."

Ideal for “Virtually Every Case Situation”

Even in small cases, Siegel notes, reviewing and analyzing documents and cases on a computer provides far better and more user-friendly results than paper and pen—or even basic office software. “As I analyzed my own cases, regardless of the size,” Siegel says, “I quickly realized the CaseMap suite of products provided the ideal complement in virtually every situation. While every case does not require each of the products, it is clear that without those products, it would take longer to prepare most cases, and the results would not be as thorough or helpful.”

Siegel uses CaseMap case analysis software, TextMap® deposition transcript management software, the TimeMap® timeline graphing tool and NoteMap® outlining tools in all types of cases, including personal injury, workers’ compensation, Social Security disability, products liability, commercial litigation and medical malpractice. Read more about Siegel's experience.

Easy to Import and Organize Case Data

Like Siegel, you can use CaseMap software to organize the major components of litigation—even smaller cases—quickly and effectively. CaseMap enables you to identify and link facts, legal issues and parties involved in each case and store them in specialized relational spreadsheets for ready access and analysis.

Bringing information into CaseMap is almost as easy as grabbing a pen and paper. You can type data directly or, in just a few mouse clicks, transfer it from other legal software products that have a Send To CaseMap feature.

For example, if you use Concordance® litigation management software:

  • Just right-click anywhere in the document and choose Send To. In this way, you can link the document—or entire query of documents―to CaseMap and quickly create new object record(s).
  • If the document has been processed with optical character recognition (OCR) software, you can bring specific text over to CaseMap as a fact. Highlight that text, right-click on it and choose Send To.
  • Once information is in CaseMap, you can link back to the exact text you highlighted anytime. No more searching through pages of documents to find specific text.

More than 30 litigation support and electronic data discovery products offer "Send to CaseMap" functionality, and others will soon. The Send to CaseMap features in these products provide a common way to cull critical passages out of source material and to automatically create facts in CaseMap based on these passages. Here is a short list of some of the products that offer the Send To CaseMap functionality:

  • Adobe® Acrobat® (the Reader application has Send to CaseMap; you would need the Standard or Professional version of the full application for Bulk Send to CaseMap).
  • Concordance® litigation management software
  • Hummingbird®
  • lexis.com®
  • LiveNote®
  • Ringtail Legal®
  • Summation® LG
  • LexisNexis® Total Litigator
  • TextMap® deposition transcript management software

See Case Relationships Clearly

CaseMap can help you see the links between elements in your case―connections you might not otherwise notice. “There is so much information in every case that it is easy to overlook a relationship or fail to see its importance,” says Siegel. “With more traditional methods, it was more difficult to quickly retrieve information and it was easier to miss things. There were no shortcuts to help see patterns in case information. With CaseMap, there are, and it is easy to retrieve and review information.”

Another important aspect of CaseMap is its ability to narrow information for analysis. For example, with a few clicks, a user can see each fact related to any individual, place or event.

Coming Soon!

In addition, you soon will be able to add the e-DiscoveryMap™ review tool to your litigation workflow capabilities for smaller cases. Use e-DiscoveryMap to review batches of e-mails, automatically populate key players into your CaseMap cast of characters and link PDF e-mails to those characters.

30 Second Skill Tuning: Importing Issues into TextMap® 4

A brand new feature of TextMap 4 enables you to easily import an issue outline from a corresponding CaseMap case file:

  • Create your issue outline in CaseMap.
  • Then begin making annotations in TextMap.
  • Highlight text from your transcript, and give your mouse a right click. Then, choose Annotate in TextMap from the context menu.
  • Click the Linked Issues tab and then the Manage Issues button.
  • You’ll see the familiar CaseMap icon with the word “Import” right next to it. Click Import. That’s it!

Now you can import all of your CaseMap issues into your TextMap file. Each issue is color coded, so it’s really easy to determine which annotations are linked to specific issues. When you are ready to send this information to CaseMap, the issues will already be linked.

This is just one of the new features in TextMap 4. Learn about the rest of the new additions.

CaseMap® Intake Interview Jumpstart Feature

More and more clients are using this feature to collect valuable case information from clients and then transfer it to CaseMap. How can you do it?

Just e-mail clients or prospective clients a CaseMap Intake Interview Form (word-processing document). They can use it to provide you with background information about the persons, organizations and facts in their case and about questions they may have regarding how you're going to handle their matter.

When clients return the completed form to you, a software wizard imports it into CaseMap, filling in five spreadsheets and jumpstarting the creation of a new case file―or augmenting the information you've already collected. CaseMap even automatically creates a ReportBook that summarizes the information your clients provided and lays out the next steps in the case analysis process.

The result of the Intake Interview Jumpstart? You get a case file up and rolling with incredibly little work. At the same time, you honor your clients by involving them in the case analysis process in a valuable way.

The Intake Interview Jumpstart feature works well with numerous types of clients, including corporate counsel, who frequently live with a dispute for months or years before it turns into a piece of litigation.

If you want to see this feature first hand, check out our 17-minute online tutorial that shows the Intake Interview Jumpstart feature in action.

You can also check out the input and one of the outputs from the Intake Interview Jumpstart process:
