FYI for July 2006
It’s been a little over a year since we
released TextMap® 2, our transcript summary tool that works
hand-in-hand with CaseMap®, so we asked our clients to give us
their honest assessments. Check out their comments and see why
they’re in love with this tool that features cross-transcript
searching, built-in PDF reporting, condensed transcript
printing and much more. Then attend one of the featured live
webinars coming up in August.
Over the next few Client FYIs we want to
introduce you to the LexisNexis® Total Litigator suite.
CaseMap will be the workflow platform where all of the key
products that make up the suite will link and
integrate. We’ll start our series with an introduction to
LexisNexis® CourtLink®, the one-stop shop for all your case
investigation research needs!
Learn even more about the LexisNexis Total
Litigator suite by joining CaseSoft co-founder, Bob Wiss for a
live webinar covering “Best Practices in Litigation Workflow.”
You’ll have three dates to choose from—pick the best time for
your busy schedule.
Are you attending the International Legal
Technology Association (ILTA) conference or the ABA Annual
Meeting in August? Find out about the special drawings you’ll
be entered in if you come by and “hear” all about what’s
new!

Clients Profess Their Love for TextMap, our
Deposition Summary Tool
Who’s using TextMap and what are they saying
about it? Tens of thousands of litigators at law firms and
government agencies large and small around the globe are using
TextMap. TextMap is not only used by trial teams, but also by
private and government investigators to cull passages from
interviews.
Here are samples of the feedback we’re
getting on TextMap:
Before CaseSoft developed its suite of
software products, I worked with a patchwork quilt of
software tools to create the functionality I needed for
trial work. With the advent of the capability of TextMap to
search across depositions and send excerpts to a chronology,
I can work completely ‘within the suite’ to prepare for
trial.
Jonathan Head Bradley Arant Rose &
White
--------------------------------
In any case, it is one thing to find
information. The challenge, however, is maximizing the
utility of that information for use at trial. Until you do
that, it’s really nothing more than paper in a box. I’ve
used TextMap and CaseMap extensively for trials and
arbitrations, and love the way TextMap enables me
to easily integrate testimony from volumes and volumes
of depositions into my CaseMap chronology and issue
outlines. I no longer go through the tedious process of
preparing page/line summaries, and find I am using the
information much more effectively.
Peter B. Maretz Shea, Stokes &
Carter
--------------------------------
I was on a conference call not long
ago for a deposition. During the questioning the witness
said something that I knew was false. I pulled her husband’s
depo up in TextMap, searched for the word ’Tiffany’ to see
what the husband had said about her and another person
talking on a specific day and then said ’Counsel, I’ve got
page x, line x of Mr. So-n-So’s depo right here and it
clearly states the opposite of what she just advised us’. If
THAT is not a total booster, I don’t know what is. The line
became very quiet — like someone just stole their voice
away. The case settled shortly thereafter.
Howard T. Sutter, Esq. Boyd &
Sutter
--------------------------------
What advantages does TextMap offer
over other transcript summary tools?
- Simplicity ... Clients tell us that
TextMap is incredibly easy to learn and to use — easier than
other transcript summary solutions. The simplicity of
TextMap makes it a winner, especially with the large
percentage of litigators who are working with electronic
transcripts for the first time.
- Functionality ... TextMap offers features
not found in other transcript summary tools. For example,
TextMap includes a built-in PDF Writer that allows you to
create PDF versions of transcripts and TextMap reports
without need for a full Acrobat® license. Also, while other
transcript summary products also link to our flagship
CaseMap case analysis tool, the links between TextMap and
CaseMap are particularly strong.
- Price ... TextMap is $149 per user
license. The primary competition for TextMap costs $695 per
user license, over 400% more.
Here’s one implication of this price
difference: If you don’t already have our CaseMap case
analysis software, you can get both CaseMap and TextMap for
less than the cost of a product that’s strictly focused on
transcripts.
CaseMap makes it easy to create polished and
practical case analysis work product that can be used to
impress clients and scare the opposition right from the first
day work on a case begins — years before depositions are
completed and a transcript summary tool becomes useful.
CaseMap has dozens of other practical benefits (e.g., making
it easy to file or fight summary judgment, analyzing case law)
well beyond the transcript area. All available for the same
dollars it would cost to just get a competing transcript
product.
Now, it’s certainly true that some
transcript solutions offer realtime transcription, a feature
that TextMap does not provide. Given the nature of a case or
deposition, it may well make sense to invest in a transcript
product that supports realtime and also in the cost in dollars
and time to set up the actual realtime transcript feed with
the court reporter, etc. We argue, however, that for the
majority of depositions getting a realtime feed isn’t
essential and that it may not be worth the substantial extra
dollars and complexity to have this feature available for
every litigator.
How can I learn more about
TextMap? The best way is to watch our no-charge
live webinars that show TextMap and CaseMap in
action.

Announcing New CaseMap 6—Easier Case Analysis
CaseMap 6 was released this past May and
we’re very happy to report that there have been virtually no
glitches. The new features have been very well received by
thousands of clients.
In a recent interview, CaseSoft co-founder
Greg Krehel said:
“We’re jazzed about CaseMap 6. While our
clients and prospective clients will be real judges of our
success, we’d like to think CaseMap 6 is both more powerful
and, paradoxically, all the easier to use.
We’re proud of the creative ideas we’ve
built into our tools. For example, our clients love the
unique ReportBook work product we introduced in CaseMap 5. I
believe CaseMap 6 offers several similar innovation
home runs. For example, the new Intake Interview
Jumpstart feature lets the ultimate client provide case
background information electronically and then
automatically imports this knowledge into a number
of CaseMap spreadsheets. It’s a very practical feature that
delivers two of CaseMap’s core benefits—early case analysis
and building terrific client rapport.
We’re also very excited about the new PDF
Bates Stamping functionality we’re introducing along with
CaseMap 6. Bates Stamp thousands of PDFs and then let CaseMap
create a document index spreadsheet based on them
automatically filling in the Bates Number and number of Pages
columns.
A final comment: we extend a giant Thank You
to the hundreds of CaseMap users who were kind enough take
part in the interviews that shaped the features in CaseMap
6.”
Here are a few of the key new features in
CaseMap 6:
- Summary Judgment Opportunity & Risk
Analysis Tools
- Tools that make it easier to create
Motions for Summary Judgment and Memorandum in Opposition
- Intake Interview Jumpstart tool that gets
case analysis and client relationships off to a fast start
- Enhanced Document Indexing &
Privilege Log Tools
- Enhanced integration with Adobe
Acrobat®, Applied Discovery® and many other document
indexing and EDD tools
- Easier culling of facts from source
material stored in over 20 other applications
- Optional PDF Bates Stamping tool that
integrates with the CaseMap Document Index spreadsheet
A series of brief webinars showing the new
features in action are available at www.casesoft.com/wncm6wnar.htm.

Last February, LexisNexis® introduced Total
Litigator, a straightforward tool which enables attorneys to
uncover vital information necessary to gain strategic
advantages throughout the litigation lifecycle, all in one
place. LexisNexis is a leading provider of legal, news and
business information services and tools proven to improve firm
productivity and profitability.
CaseSoft joined the LexisNexis family of
products in May. CaseMap 6 will provide the workflow platform
into which all of the key products that make up the LexisNexis
Total Litigator suite will be linked and integrated. Over the
next few months we’ll introduce you to all of the key products
that make up the LexisNexis Total Litigator suite, starting
with CourtLink, the case investigation research tool.
CourtLink Strategic
Profiles CourtLink is a whole new way to use court
records with its unmatched combination of access to the
nation’s courts, advanced searching capabilities and
nationwide document retrieval.
Strategic Profiles is a component of
CourtLink that helps gain insight into company litigation
history, attorney experience on a particular nature or suit
and map out federal litigation trends. Strategic Profiles
presents court docket information in easy-to-read graphics and
data charts, allowing you to quickly identify trends,
opportunities and risk.
Judicial Strategic
Profiles Understand whether the judge assigned to
your case has substantial or limited experience in a
particular area of law, and learn how the judge handled
similar cases. Uncover the experience of your opposing counsel
before the judge in particular matters.
Attorney Strategic
Profiles Gain insight into an opposing counsel’s
practice area experience and number of published decisions,
learn whether the attorney has argued similar cases before a
specific judge and see prior strategies employed, including
case resolution.
Litigant Strategic
Profiles Research the litigation history of your
client or the opposing litigant to uncover participation in
prior similar cases and discern patterns of case
resolution.

Learn a Key Feature in 30 Seconds: TextMap
Work Product Options
TextMap 2 features a built-in PDF feature
like that in CaseMap 5 or 6. Rather than printing TextMap
reports, you can create PDFs of them without the need for a
full Acrobat license. There’s even a “Print to PDF and Email”
option that creates a PDF of a TextMap report and
automatically attaches it to an email that’s ready to send.
Check out these three reports:
Condensed Transcript
Printing Two clicks in TextMap 2 and any
transcript can be printed or PDFed as either full-sized
pages or with “condensed” pages where four transcript pages
are placed on a single output page. Four-up printing starts
with the second output page.
View a Condensed Transcript generated as a PDF
directly from TextMap 2 >>
Search Results Reports Anytime you
conduct a word or phrase search in TextMap 2, two mouse
clicks creates a printed or PDF’d report of the search
results. A Search Report lists all word/phrase hits across
all transcripts. For each hit, the transcript name and
page/line reference is displayed and followed by the search
word displayed in context — 12 lines of transcript appear
above the word hit and 12 lines of transcript appear below.
View a Search Results Report generated as a
PDF directly from TextMap 2 >>
Transcript Highlight Reports TextMap
makes it easy to cull key testimony from transcripts and
organize it in CaseMap. We call the text selections that are
sent to CaseMap “highlights” in that they remain highlighted
in the transcript for easy identification. TextMap 2
includes a new Transcript Highlight Report that prints the
transcript segments you’ve sent to CaseMap in the order in
which they appear within the source deposition or
examination. Printed below each transcript text selection
are the associated fact fields from CaseMap, e.g., Date
& Time, Fact Text, Source, Linked Issues.
