Leading Technology, Optimizing Value with CaseMap® and
TextMap®
It was a
pleasure meeting everyone who visited us at the LexisNexis®
booth last month during ILTA. The show provided a fantastic
opportunity for us to connect with you and share best
practices. In keeping with the ILTA theme, “Leading
Technology, Optimizing Value,” we were excited to demonstrate
the enhancements made over the past year in both CaseMap® 8.5
fact and issue management software and TextMap® 5 transcript
management software. In case you didn’t make it to the show,
here is what you missed:
Get more out of what you put into CaseMap:
Dynamic two-way integration with
LexisNexis research
content
Let’s say
you’re working in a CaseMap file and you see the name of an
expert witness you want to know a little more about. Instead
of going off task and digging around various places, now you
can simply click on the name and continue your research—right
from your case file. You even receive suggestions on
appropriate sources so you can be sure to leave no stone
unturned.
Through
integration with the legal profession’s premier citation
service, CaseMap now displays Shepard’s Signal™
indicators so you can easily validate cited cases. Plus, a new
Case Jumpstart Wizard lets you reduce tedious data entry and
set up each new case with ease. Just enter case players and
other entities in a simple-to-use form. The Wizard
automatically fills in the correct spreadsheets with the data
you enter (see more detail in the 30-Second Skill Tuning
article below). Learn how you can get even more out of what you
put into CaseMap 8.5.
Why long-time LiveNote™ firms like Anapol,
Schwartz, Weiss, Cohan, Feldman & Smalley are switching to
TextMap 5
Firms who
need to reduce costs, manage more with less and gain remote
access to transcripts have been switching to TextMap 5
transcript management software. “TextMap was so clearly
superior to LiveNote on two principal levels,” said Mark
LeWinter, shareholder at Anapol Schwartz. “First, the pricing
model for TextMap was far more attractive than what we had in
place with LiveNote and it created a scenario where the value
proposition was a no-brainer advantage for TextMap. Second, I
personally found TextMap to be much more conducive to the
realities of life for a busy litigator who spends a lot of
time on the road. TextMap is very portable and much easier for
our paperless work environment.”
Read the case study to understand the benefits
this firm realized, including significant cost savings,
the ability to manage more case work with greater efficiency
and remote access to the transcript database.
How to get real-time
transcripts
Our
friends at Stenograph joined us at our ILTA booth and set up a
live transcript feed to demonstrate real-time integration with
TextMap 5 transcript management software. Everyone was
thrilled at the idea of being able to join a deposition late
and still receive the full transcript live, being able to use
a wireless or serial connection, and having the ability to get
automatic updates throughout the day. And all at a fraction of
the cost of other transcript tools! Attendees told us
how important it is for them to gain efficiencies, reduce
costs and increase productivity. And we were delighted to
speak with so many of you who are already using CaseMap 8.5
and TextMap 5 to do just that. Hope to see you again at ILTA
in 2010!

30-Second Skill Tuning: CaseMap® 8.5 Case
Jumpstart Wizard
A new
feature in CaseMap® 8.5 fact and issue management software
provides an easy answer to the question, “Where do I start?”
The Case Jumpstart Wizard makes it easy for even novice
CaseMap users to input case players and organizations with
step-by-step guidance.
As you
start a new CaseMap case, the Case Jumpstart Wizard
automatically appears to assist you in populating the
characters involved. To navigate through the Wizard, click the
Next button on each page—or jump to a
specific section using the navigation on the left. Once you
finish, the Wizard will automatically transfer the data you
entered into the appropriate CaseMap spreadsheets. Now you
have jump-started your case and reduced data entry time!
Here’s a
quick recap:
- Start a
new case. As soon as you enter all the pertinent background
information about the file, the Case Jumpstart Wizard will
automatically launch. You can also access the Wizard
directly through the Help menu.
- The
Wizard will walk you through adding the litigants involved
in the case, the judge, opposing counsel, experts and other
witnesses, as well as additional people and organizations
involved.
- Click
Finish, and CaseMap will save the cast of
characters you just entered and add them to the appropriate
spreadsheets. Click the Persons spreadsheet and see that the
people you added through the Wizard are listed, along with a
field for “Type” to show what their involvement is (expert,
judge, litigant, etc.).
- Now you
can easily dig deeper to get the facts you need for each
party. While still in the Persons spreadsheet, click the
down arrow next to a full name. CaseMap now offers suggested
research customized to each party (and even guides you
through the search). This integration with LexisNexis®
research helps you gather the facts you need in order to
make important associations that might otherwise be missed.
If you have questions about the new Case Jumpstart
Wizard or any of the new features in CaseMap 8.5, please give
us a call at 866.316.8525.

Filtering vs. Tagging in
CaseMap®
What’s the
difference between tagging and filtering in CaseMap® software?
One point of confusion comes from the fact that the term
“tagging” is used in Concordance® discovery management
software to identify records on which the user wishes to
perform an action. The term means something entirely
different in CaseMap.
Tagging in
CaseMap enables you to identify records that meet specified
criteria while still displaying records that don’t.
It places a red mark to the left of each record that has been
tagged. It is comparable to highlighting a line of text on a
printed page. You can still see all of the other text, but
some stands out from the rest.
You cannot
manipulate tagged records in CaseMap. They only serve as a
visual cue on the screen and on printed reports. If you wanted
to take action affecting only some of the records, such as
printing or exporting, you would run a filter
instead.
Unlike
tagging, filtering hides the records in the spreadsheet that
don’t meet the specified criteria. Only the filtered records
get printed, exported or updated. Filtering is generally used
much more often than tagging. As always, please
feel free to contact us with any questions at 866.316.8525 or
casemap.support@lexisnexis.com.
We are in the office from 9 A.M. to 6
P.M. ET, Monday through Friday.

Using the “Mark Me Up”
ReportBook
ReportBooks are an important CaseMap feature. A
ReportBook is a compilation of any number of saved CaseMap
case analysis reports packaged together with a cover page, a
table of contents and report-specific title pages. It takes
just a few clicks to generate a ReportBook.
ReportBooks can be printed or turned into PDFs using
the built-in CaseMap PDF functionality. Each time you print or
create a PDF from a ReportBook, the reports it contains are
based on the most current data in the case file.
While you
can create ReportBooks from scratch, each CaseMap case file
already offers a series of pre-built ReportBooks. One of the
defaults is named Mark Me Up. This ReportBook makes it very
easy to get clients involved in the case preparation process.
It’s designed to help you put early case analysis into your
client’s hands for review after an initial client
interview.
The Mark
Me Up ReportBook contains three reports: a Cast of Characters,
a Fact Chronology and a Document Index. It also includes an
Introduction that explains the contents to clients and asks
for their assistance in editing report information.
View a Mark Me Up ReportBook generated using the
Hawkins Example Case. The ReportBook available
at the link above was created using the built-in CaseMap PDF
capability, which works even if you don’t have a full Adobe®
Acrobat® license.
Please
print and study this sample work product. Pay special
attention to the default Introduction. You can edit the
Introduction and the report layouts as you see fit. The key
factor to remember is that each new CaseMap case file has a
Mark Me Up ReportBook you can create as a paper document or
PDF with just a few clicks.
Following
your next client interview, why not enter your notes about
people, facts and documents into CaseMap and use the Mark Me
Up ReportBook to send your client some impressive initial work
product?
